Now that your box is ready, it’s time to start growing; for that you’ll need a seed (or clone) 🌱

Because only female cannabis plants produce the flowers we’re interested in;

we recommend getting feminized seeds to avoid risking wasting time growing a male from a regular seed.

Do some window shopping; get inspired by names, read descriptions and let your heart do the choosing 💚

Your plant needs a growing medium to develop its roots and nutrients to grow big and strong 💪

Keep things simple; start with soil :)
It’s compact and easy to grow in 🌱

Once you get some experience you’ll be able to experiment with other mediums such as hydroponics.

Get a bag of light mix soil - cheap and simple to get started.
And will last you for a couple grows 🌲🌲🌲

Ready to grow? 🌱

Drop your seed in a lukewarm glass of water and place it in the dark for 24-48 hours.

Once the seed has cracked and the tap root is out, you can sow it in your first pot.

Here’s our detailed germination and sowing guides.

During this stage the plant develops its roots, leaves, and stems in order to get strong to support the big colas it will produce in the next stage 💪

Outdoors this stage happens in spring/summer.

Indoors you can give much more day time and the plant will benefit from it 🌞

The light schedule for this stage is 18/6.
18 hours of day, 6 hours of night

Training is key to unlocking your plant’s yield potential.
For that you’ll need a bit of coated wire to bend the branches in order to get a flat canopy with multiple main growth sites 🌵

Because cannabis is a photoperiodic plant, it’s starts flowering when the days get shorter during fall.

The plant develops its flowers in order to get pollinated and perpetuate the species.

But because there won’t be males around to pollinate it will make big fat flowers for you to enjoy 😍

The important part is that it must get 12 hours of uninterrupted night in order to flower.

So, when your plant reaches half your available height it’s time to switch it to the flowering schedule; aka "flip to bloom".

The light schedule for this stage is 12/12.
12 hours of day, 12 hours of night

Check your strain’s flowering time, usually around 7-8 weeks, with some sativa dominant strains flowering in over 10 weeks.

The BIG DAY & how to not fuck it up!

You’ve been lied to…
It’s not about the flowers, it’s about what’s ON the flowers: trichomes

Trichomes are the tiny sticky mushroom shaped glands that give cannabis flower it's frosted looks ❄⁠
They contain all the good stuff; cannabinoids (THC, CBD,...), terpenes, and flavonoids 👨🏼‍🔬⁠

Introducing the Golden Rule 💛

The only way to know the perfect time to harvest is to check the trichomes 🔬⁠
Get yourself a $25 USB microscope and remove the guesswork and stop worrying if it's ready or not.

⚠️ Do NOT harvest when the trichomes are clear and translucent, they are not ripe yet and won't be enjoyable to consume ⚠️⁠

As they mature, the trichomes will get progressively cloudy before their color shifts to amber/golden 💛⁠
⁠
The cloudy/amber ratio will determine the type of effects:⁠
Cloudy = energetic head high 🤯⁠
Amber = relaxing body high 😴⁠
⁠
That’s another cool thing of growing your own, you’ll get the effects you enjoy!

Congrats on your freshly harvested bouquet of bud 💐
Now’s the part that requires the most mental strength; waiting for your harvest to dry and cure 🥵

This process is what makes the difference between an OK weed and top-shelf prime quality bud 🔥

Your patience will be rewarded with the best tasting weed you’ve ever had 🥇

Like aging fine wine, cannabis curing improves the taste for a much smoother experience 👌
But don’t worry, it’s much faster than aging wine 🤣

The first step is slowly (4-8 days) drying your freshly harvested plant.
This can be done by hanging the branches in a cardboard box after removing the big fan leaves.

The optimal drying environment is around 50% relative humidity (RH) at room temperature (21°C / 70°F) 🌡

Once the small stems snap the buds are ready to be jarred up for the next curing step 👇

When the buds are dry; you can now sample your harvest!
But keep in mind that the more you wait, the better it gets - so don’t overdo it ;)

Time for the second step; curing in glass jars.

Get some mason jars (not too big to avoid mold issues) and fill them up 3/4 with bud - leaving some room for the buds to move around when shaken.

The goal here is to slowly stabilize moisture content of the buds by airing out (aka burping) the jars to remove the excess moisture.

Burp the jars daily until you’ve reached the cure zone 👌

The optimal curing environment is around 60-65% RH at room temperature (21°C / 70°F) 🌡

Take notes of the curing time when sampling and check if you notice a difference as your bud cures.

Congratulations, you’ve now done 1 full cycle and get to enjoy your own homegrown bud 🥳

What will you do with all that weed?
Hash? Rosin? Edibles? The choice is yours!

The awesome thing about this hobby is that each cycle keeps getting better, provided you learn from your mistakes.
